During the season of Lent, we have been following Jesus on a 40-day sojourn through the
wilderness. Now, this April, we follow him on his journey to the cross, to death, and ultimately to
resurrection and new life.
Holy Week begins with Palm-Passion Sunday. Jesus entered Jerusalem to the adulation of the
crowds. But before the end of the week, the crowds had turned on him. This year, we hear Luke’s
account of Jesus’s last week, his suffering, his Passion.
We’ll be sharing our mid-week Holy Week services with some of our neighboring churches.
Cornelius UMC hosted us at the beginning of Lent for Ash Wednesday. It’s our turn to host for
Maundy Thursday, as we remember how Jesus celebrated the Passover with his disciples and
instituted the sacrament of Holy Communion. Rev. Linda Quanstrom will bring the message as we
celebrate Jesus’s last supper.
Hillsboro UMC will host a Good Friday service, along with several area congregations. As we
remember Jesus’s arrest, trial, crucifixion, and death, we will consider Jesus’s seven last words from
the cross.
But death does not have the final word. Through his death, Jesus conquered death, broke the
power of sin and death, and brought forth new life. As we celebrate Easter, we consider the role of
Mary Magdalene, the apostle Jesus sent to tell the story of his resurrection.
Finally, on the last Sunday of the month, we check in with the apostles, in the wake of Jesus’s
death and resurrection, as they seek to spread the good news, whatever the consequences may be.
I pray a blessing on each of you, as we celebrate this holy season, as we tell again the old, old
story, of Jesus and his love.
Blessings,
Pastor David+
